There are very important and somewhat confusing stipulations concerning a miniature chihuahua breed and the type of chihuahua a person chooses will largely depend on what standard they feel is the best. The breed standards that are most recognized is the American and British breed standards. In both of these standards, an interesting rule applies, because, unlike other breed standards which include weight and height, the stipulation for a miniature chihuahua breed only addresses weight requirements. While both the American and British standards call for a chihuahua breed to be no more than 6 pounds, the British standards stipulate that a chihuahua weighing 2 to 4 pounds is preferred.

In most cases, the American standard of breeds is the most acceptable and conducive with the standard regulations and guidelines set forth by the FCI. The FCI is a federation of international kennel clubs who are also the sanctioning body for various international dog shows and competitions. They stipulate, unlike the British breed standards, that a chihuahua must weigh between 3 and 6 pounds. While larger Chihuahuas are not precluded from breed certification this stipulation only means that larger Chihuahuas are not permitted entrance in conformation shows. This is where a miniature chihuahua breed that meets these particular weight standards is much more acceptable than a larger, household pet chihuahua.

The issue of proper breeds is a very important issue to many chihuahua owners and these owners, even if they are not interested in showing their pets, are very particular when it comes to the complicated and intricate process of meeting proper breed stipulations.
